How Nonprofits Can Navigate Shutdown Uncertainty

By Phil Gilchrist, Executive Director, Advancing Macomb

This past week, both Michigan and the federal government were on the brink of a shutdown. Here in Michigan, a last-minute budget deal in Lansing may have prevented immediate disruption for nonprofits at the state level. However, uncertainty remains in Washington.

A federal shutdown could cause significant disruptions for nonprofits. Federal employees may be furloughed, leaving agencies unable to answer questions, process paperwork or move grant applications forward. If you’re a nonprofit leader, it’s crucial to consider how your organization might be impacted. For nonprofits with federal grants or contracts, here are three key steps to take right now:

  1. Reach out to your contract administrator. If you have federal grants or contracts, review these documents immediately and reach out to your contract administrators as soon as possible to understand the potential implications. It’s unlikely you will be able to reach them if a shutdown were to occur.
  2. Engage in advocacy. Now is the time for nonprofits to use their voices. Contact your federal representatives and share success stories of your work and the impact a government shutdown would have on their constituents. The Macomb County Chamber provides contact information for federal representatives serving Macomb County.
  3. Review available resources. The National Council of Nonprofits provides a resource guide and checklist to help nonprofits prepare for a potential shutdown. This is a valuable tool to help organizations prepare for challenges. Also, be sure to follow the Michigan Nonprofit Association for important updates.

As the potential for a federal shutdown persists, now is the time for nonprofits to take action and prepare. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and share relevant resources as they become available.
