We have a window of opportunity right now. Last month, I had the honor of presenting to the Macomb County Board of Commissioners, requesting that a portion of Macomb County’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds be allocated to Advancing Macomb to support nonprofit organizations throughout Macomb County.

February 2023 - Michigan Nonprofits struggling with the hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic can now take the first step to receive funding from the $35 Million MI Nonprofit Relief Fund. The Michigan Nonprofit Association along with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO), officially opened the "intent to apply" phase for the relief fund. Nonprofits interested in applying for grants should fill out the intent to apply form at MINonprofitRelief.org. Nonprofits do NOT have to be members of MNA to apply for/receive grant funding.

United Way for Southeastern Michigan, has announced the year two recipients of $1 million in grant funding. Macomb County Ministerial Alliance is partnering with Advancing Macomb Foundation on a county-wide research analysis that provides context to past and present racial inequities in Macomb County, particularly regarding housing, education, and employment, to guide future decision-making regarding equitable support for community development projects and programs.

“We had a private office and that’s a big overhead,” said Diane Banks, executive director of the Mount Clemens-based Advancing Macomb, a nonprofit that works to bring about collaborative initiatives that provide sustainable solutions for communities. Prior to the pandemic, Banks was already working remotely one day a week. “When the pandemic hit in March of 2020 my two staff people went fully remote.”

Nonprofit organization Advancing Macomb has been awarded a $50,000 grant to support its Breaking Barriers to Play initiative. Breaking Barriers to Play was developed to lower the cost of recreation programming that is community and family centered. The program is a public-private, cost-sharing partnership that allows youth to participate in programming in their own communities at little to no cost.
