Nonprofit to add co-working space in new Mount Clemens home, program expansion

Crain's Detroit Business, March 20, 2024 - Macomb Foster Closet is set to expand its services for foster and adopted youth and families from a newly acquired site in Mount Clemens... Research that Advancing Macomb completed with the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy at Grand Valley State University showed Macomb County's nonprofit sector is under-resourced and under-developed, said Phil Gilchrist, executive director of Advancing Macomb, an agency working to increase nonprofit capacity and leverage resources to assist on complex issues in the county.
“Small nonprofits in the county need support and resources to be more impactful in their missions and more successful as organizations,” he said. “Access to affordable co-working space establishes new sector infrastructure in Macomb County and helps create an environment for nonprofits to grow and thrive.”...

New bridge will span spillway

Mount Clemens-Clinton-Harrison Journal | Published March 14, 2024 - HARRISON TOWNSHIP — A new way to cross the Clinton River Spillway will soon arrive.
Harrison Township is building a new pedestrian bridge to connect the spillway along Jefferson Avenue, budgeting $3.45 million for the bridge and associated walkways. The pedestrian bridge will supplement the existing bridge at the mouth of the spillway, which is designed for automobiles and challenging for nonmotorized traffic to safely cross.

New pedestrian bridge over Clinton River to link miles of trails along Lake St. Clair

Crain's Detroit Business - February 28, 2024 - Plans for a new pedestrian bridge along the Lake St. Clair waterfront in Harrison Township are moving forward with a $1 million grant from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation. When complete, the new crossing over the Clinton River spillway will improve pedestrian safety and provide a new link in the Great Lakes Way trail system, a developing series of greenways and water trails stretching from southern Lake Huron near Port Huron to western Lake Erie near Toledo.

Advancing Macomb benefits from hockey team’s ugly jersey auction

January 27, 2024 - Macomb Daily - Motor City Rockers’ hockey jerseys appear to be a hot commodity.
Even the ugly ones.
That is evident by the donations that the minor league professional hockey team has been making to local charities.
Among the latest recipients is Advancing Macomb, a nonprofit organization that works to solve community challenges and enrich the lives of community members, which received a donation of $1,500 during a home game at Big Boy Arena in Fraser. The donation was garnered through an online auction of jerseys designed to look like ugly Christmas sweaters that players wore during a home game sponsored by Bell’s Brewery.

MOUNT CLEMENS — About a quarter of a mile separates the Anton Art Center from Advancing Macomb’s offices in Mount Clemens. The short walk down Macomb Place only takes a few minutes at a solid clip, but few people’s trips match the magnitude of Phil Gilchrist’s.
The executive director of the Anton Art Center for eight years, Gilchrist has traded his spot at one nonprofit for another to become the executive director of Advancing Macomb.

Dozens of Macomb County nonprofits receive COVID-19 relief funds

Macomb Daily - December 6, 2023 -Nearly 1,400 nonprofits in Michigan, including 46 in Macomb County, have received grant funds from a pool of $35 million to help them survive and thrive as they emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Michigan Nonprofit Association and Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity announced Tuesday the 1,373 recipients of a grant between $5,000 and $25,000 via the MI Nonprofit Relief Fund, which was tasked with dispersing American Rescue Plan Act dollars to nonprofits.

Sixteen years later Cairns Community Center has impact in Mount Clemens neighborhood

Macomb Daily, September 12, 2023 - ...The center ceased operations until a few years later when Advancing Macomb went to bat for young people in the community who no longer had a place to play.
Following on its mission to provide leadership and resources needed to solve the challenges in the community, Advancing Macomb negotiated an agreement with the City of Mount Clemens to assume ownership and operations from the Mount Clemens Community Schools district. They also secured the $290,000 in funding enabling the city to contract with TCB Youth Mentoring, a nonprofit youth organization dedicated to assisting at-risk youth as the center's new operating partner.
