Working remotely: What began as a necessity has become the norm

“We had a private office and that’s a big overhead,” said Diane Banks, executive director of the Mount Clemens-based Advancing Macomb, a nonprofit that works to bring about collaborative initiatives that provide sustainable solutions for communities. Prior to the pandemic, Banks was already working remotely one day a week. “When the pandemic hit in March of 2020 my two staff people went fully remote.”

Advancing Macomb snares grant to help lower the cost of local recreational programs

Posted December 22, 2022

Nonprofit organization Advancing Macomb has been awarded a $50,000 grant to support its Breaking Barriers to Play initiative. Breaking Barriers to Play was developed to lower the cost of recreation programming that is community and family centered. The program is a public-private, cost-sharing partnership that allows youth to participate in programming in their own communities at little to no cost.

Advancing Macomb’s Breaking Barriers to Play program receives Davidson Grant

Posted December 12, 2022

Project Play: Southeast Michigan, an initiative of the Community Foundation, partnered with the William Davidson Foundation in issuing $1 million in 18 one-time grants to local youth sports organizations to celebrate what would have been Mr. Davidson's 100th birthday. Advancing Macomb's Breaking Barriers to Play program is one of those grant recipients.

Mount Clemens-Clinton-Harrison Journal | Published November 9, 2022 - MOUNT CLEMENS — Changes to recreation programs in Mount Clemens held top billing as Mayor Laura Kropp delivered her 2022 State of the City address at the Cairns Community Center on Oct. 14... Another organization that contributed to the redevelopment of the recreation program was Advancing Macomb, which worked with the city and TCB to provide funding for programs, equipment and facilities.

Collaboration Solves a Community Challenge

Providing kids a safe place to grow and play is vital for the health of our communities. When Advancing Macomb learned that an important community center in Mount Clemens had closed because of lack of funding, we went to work. The Cairns Community Center fills an essential gap in the Mount Clemens community as continued disinvestment and shrinking tax bases forced the city to cut back on recreational programming. These cuts put youth sports and recreational activities out of reach for many families.
