We’ve all heard about ash trees dying in mass due to this pest called the emerald ash borer, but have we taken inventory of what has happened to our neighborhoods as a result? Well, when Macomb County Department of Planning & Economic Development participated in a Regional Green Infrastructure study in 2012, we learned just how devastated our urban forest canopy has become. Not just the ash trees have been affected. Before that was the Dutch elm disease, and we also need to account for those trees lost due to aging, utility repairs, and storm damage. When we looked at the data, it became very evident that the areas in Macomb County along and south of the Main Branch of the Clinton River were hit especially hard within the southeast Michigan region. Hit so hard that we barely have 50 percent of what is recommended by U.S. Forestry standards.

Trending upward on the shoulders of a re-energized automotive industry, Southeast Michigan has plotted a fresh move forward. What does this forward movement mean to each of the communities and are we truly connected as a region? How do all of our individual strengths come together for an even stronger combined unit? Macomb County is a proud member of the Detroit Region and has stepped up its game as a critical piece of the region’s economic ecosystem. Reinvigorating its own identity, Macomb has made itself more competitive with a greater focus on manufacturing capabilities, enhanced quality of life and making sure that our institutions are educating the workforce of today and tomorrow. This has been instrumental in a much-welcomed upsurge in economic, social, and environmental activities in Southeast Michigan.

We are featuring Advancing Macomb board member Grace Shore. Grace is the CEO of the Macomb County Chamber, a 900-member organization that is respected throughout the state. She has lived and worked in Macomb County for most of her life being involved in numerous professional, civic and business organizations in Macomb and throughout the region. She has built a strong reputation as a progressive and impactful member of the local business community during her more than 36 years with the chamber. Under Shore’s leadership, the Macomb County Chamber of Commerce has been twice recognized with the Outstanding Chamber of the Year Award from the Michigan Association of Chamber Professionals.

Advancing Macomb has hit the ground pedaling in 2017 with the great success of Macomb County’s East Side Bike Drive bike collection. As the first-ever county-wide bike drive, we are all immensely grateful for everyone who made phase one possible. From our members, partners and volunteers to the cities and townships who provided collection points throughout the county. From inception to collection, the community spirit rose with great enthusiasm throughout and around Macomb County. Phase one yielded 800 bikes from eight communities across the county.

Between the collision shops, machine supply outlets, used auto sales and vacant lots at Utica Road and Gratiot in Roseville, a bit of history lingers beneath the surface. You can see it in the bright yellow awning of the 68-year-old Chester Boot Shop, the green-and-cream 1927 Art Deco Roseville Theater, and the quaint tea room at Just Delicious Scones.
